Now that the calendar reads November 1, the holiday season has officially begun.
If your house is like mine, your mailbox is about to be filled with passionate requests for a year-end contribution from all kinds of deserving non-profit organizations.
Rescue Outreach Mission is no different; we are asking for a gift, and yes, we need funds to help the homeless of Seminole County. After all, the entire Christmas miracle is because two homeless parents found a place to spend a cold night in Bethlehem.
Obviously, year-end giving feels good, but there are some real-world implications to giving at this time of year.
The primary reason is the tax benefits of charitable donations.
Donations made before December 31 can reduce your taxable income for the current year, potentially lowering your overall tax bill. For example, if you itemize deductions, giving $1,000 to a qualifying charity could reduce your taxable income by that same amount, translating into significant savings depending on your tax bracket.
What is a qualified charity? It’s simple. Organizations recognized by the IRS as 501(c)(3) charities. Donations to individuals, political campaigns, or most private foundations generally do not qualify.
There are some limits to donations. For instance, cash contributions are generally deductible up to 60 percent of your adjusted gross income. Some gifts, like appreciated property, can have lower limits.
If your contributions exceed these limits, the excess can often be carried forward for up to five years.
And of course, you need to save receipts and non-cash donations above $500 require filing IRS Form 8283, with additional appraisals needed for high-value items.
When you look at year-end giving, there are generally three types of gifts:
Cash Donations: The simplest and most common form of year-end giving. Cash gifts can include checks, credit card payments or electronic transfers.
Property Donations: You can also donate property, such as stocks, bonds or real estate. Donations of appreciated assets can provide extra tax advantages: you may deduct the fair market value and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation.
Non-Cash Items: Gifts like clothing, furniture or vehicles are deductible if they are in good condition. The deduction is generally based on the fair market value at the time of donation.
A year-end gift to Rescue Outreach Mission is a powerful option. It isn’t just about writing a check; it’s about providing immediate relief, enabling long-term solutions, and strengthening the fabric of our community.
It is a timely and compassionate investment in families and our community.
It provides a place of shelter for a family in need, just as the innkeeper did 2000 years ago.
Everyone needs a place to call home, no matter what roof is over their head. Please help us keep a roof over their heads and meals for those most in need during the holiday season as you consider your year-end gifts.
On behalf of the families at the Rescue Outreach Mission, thank you.
